Five questions for our apprenticeship supervisor: inside mechatronics apprenticeships at STIHL Tirol

What makes a mechatronics apprenticeship successful? What really matters, and how are digitalisation and automation shaping training today? Markus Schoner has been Head of Apprenticeship Training in Mechatronics at STIHL Tirol for five years and shares his practical insights.

1. How can you tell if someone is a good fit for mechatronics – beyond their grades?

During a trial period, it quickly becomes clear who is well suited to mechatronics. Genuine interest, proactive questions and a structured approach matter more than grades. Apprentices who approach problems logically and show perseverance have a strong foundation to build on.

2. What skills are particularly important for mechatronics training?

Systematic problem-solving is key. Apprentices learn to analyse tasks, develop step-by-step solutions and take responsibility. These skills remain valuable far beyond the apprenticeship.

3. How do apprentices develop from their first to their final year?

The greatest progress is seen in a growing understanding of how things fit together. Over time, apprentices recognise how processes connect and how complex systems function. This makes them more confident, efficient and independent in their day-to-day work.

4. How are automation, digitalisation and AI changing mechatronics training?

Networked processes and data analysis are becoming increasingly important. Alongside traditional technical knowledge, digital skills are now essential. AI is not yet a central support tool for highly specific applications, but its relevance will continue to grow. The apprenticeship programme is designed to prepare apprentices for these developments.

5. What has been your personal highlight as an apprenticeship supervisor?

Winning the first state title at the TyrolSkills competition in June 2023. It was a clear confirmation that the apprenticeship programme at our site is on the right track.
