STIHL products regularly perform strongly in independent comparative tests. But what does a best in test result actually mean for the brand and its customers? Alexander Stöckl, Head of Product Management at STIHL Tirol, explains the real significance of these awards.
Best in test ratings as a guide in a crowded market
The range of garden equipment available today is broader than ever. Customers are faced with a wide variety of brands, models and price points. Independent comparative testing plays an important role in this environment. “Being rated best in test reinforces our focus on quality, ergonomics and innovation, and thereby strengthens STIHL’s position as a premium supplier”, explains Stöckl.
One example is the STIHL RMA 239 C cordless lawnmower, which was assessed by the German consumer testing organisation Stiftung Warentest and published as best in test at the end of March 2025. With an overall rating of “Good (2.1)”, it stood out for handling, safety and mowing performance. Testers also praised its clean cut, the efficient filling of the grass catcher box and its area coverage of 590 square metres per battery charge. The slightly longer charging time had little impact on the overall rating.
STIHL lawn tractors also scored highly in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung buyers guide, the F.A.Z. Kaufkompass, published at the end of June 2025. The RT 6127 ZL was recommended in the premium class, while the RT 612 was recognised for its performance and manoeuvrability.
Building trust, especially among discerning customers
These awards are particularly valuable for the target group known as prosumers – buyers who expect high levels of performance, comfort and durability.
“For this group, a test win is often a decisive factor when making an investment”, says Stöckl. “Awards help build trust, especially in the premium segment, and trust is the basis of every purchasing decision.”
A driver of product development and innovation
For STIHL, strong test results are not just a promotional tool. They also provide valuable insights for further product development. “We use the feedback from comparative testing to specifically optimise products and drive innovation”, notes Stöckl. Awards therefore serve as an internal incentive to keep raising the company’s high standards.
Conclusion
A best in test result is not an end in itself but a clear signal of quality and reliability. For customers, awards offer guidance. For STIHL, they provide both confirmation and motivation to continue developing and improving its products.
