Product testing at STIHL Tirol

At STIHL Tirol, the safety and reliability of our products are paramount. Every tool undergoes extensive testing that simulates critical scenarios and ensures structural integrity. These tests on our lawnmowers include the firing pin test, which assesses safety in the event of a sudden blockage, the handlebar test, which checks handlebar stability, and the endurance test, which evaluates the long-term durability of the entire machine. Here is a brief overview of these key procedures:

Firing pin test – maximum safety under extreme conditions

Why do we carry out this test?
The firing pin test simulates an extreme mowing situation where the cutting tool suddenly encounters a hard obstacle and stops immediately. This standardised procedure ensures that, even under these conditions, there is no danger to the user. Safety is our highest priority – that’s why the test is performed at levels that go far beyond typical everyday use.

What is assessed?
The test is deemed failed if:

  • Any part of the device penetrates the protective target wall.
  • The cutting tool breaks.
  • The cutting tool or its mounting comes loose.

The product is not required to remain usable after completion of the test.

Handlebar test – lasting stability for comfortable operation

Why is this test important?
The handlebar test checks the durability and stability of the handlebar throughout the entire service life of the lawn mower. The applied loads significantly exceed those encountered during normal operation. This ensures that the handlebar remains reliable and comfortable to use over the long term.

What requirements must the device meet?

  • No damage may occur during the test.
  • At the end of the test, the device must be fully functional.
  • All operating and adjustment elements must function properly without  any restrictions.

The result: a durable, stable handlebar that enables comfortable operation.

Endurance test – proven durability for long-term use

What is the purpose of this test?
The endurance test evaluates the overall stability and long-term durability of the machine. The lawn mower runs for many hours on a special roller test bench developed according to STIHL internal testing standards. This demonstrates how robust our tools are, even under intensive, continuous use.

How is the test performed?
Depending on the product class, different service life requirements are tested. After the test, the machine is completely disassembled. Every component is inspected in detail, and any wear or damage is documented and evaluated.

The result: transparency, quality and reliable performance, even over the long term.
