Win-win since 2012: STIHL Tirol and the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol combine production and learning

The collaboration between STIHL Tirol and Kufstein University of Applied Sciences (FH Kufstein Tirol) shows how practical university projects can create real added value for industry while at the same time providing valuable learning experiences for students.

Since the first joint project on material flow planning for tillers in 2012, numerous practical initiatives have been carried out, the latest being an analysis of STIHL Tirol’s production training concept and a process study of the shredder production line.

During the last summer semester, students from the Master’s programme in ERP Systems & Business Process Management analysed the production training concept at STIHL Tirol. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) refers to central software solutions for managing and connecting a company’s business processes. The students revised training materials, defined core competencies and optimised the design of the new training rooms. The goal was to improve the efficiency and practical relevance of training in complex production tasks and quality awareness. The results feed directly into ongoing training planning and are already being implemented.

In a second major project in 2025, students from the Bachelor’s programme in Industrial Engineering and Management conducted a video-based process analysis of the garden shredder assembly line. Using the MTM methodology (Methods-Time Measurement), which evaluates efficiency and ergonomics by breaking down workflows into basic constituent motions with standardised time values, the students documented processes, identified optimisation potential and developed CAD-supported improvement proposals. The university’s eLearning Center provided technical support and produced video material for future training. Here too, several measures have already been implemented in production.

Both projects thrived on open exchange and strong support from STIHL Tirol – a valuable experience with real practical relevance for the students.

Martin Adam, head of the Bachelor’s programmes in Drone Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management, and the Master’s programmes in ERP Systems & Business Process Management and Smart Products & AI-driven Development at FH Kufstein Tirol, adds: “STIHL Tirol places great importance on developing its managers and putting employees at the centre of its focus. There is also a strong connection with our university in this area. For example, training programmes for supervisors and department heads are implemented to strengthen communication and leadership skills for successful company management.”

Students particularly enjoy using the external lecture rooms at STIHL Tirol, which allow for hands-on learning directly on site.

Today, numerous FH Kufstein Tirol graduates work at the gardening equipment manufacturer in Langkampfen – a sign of the lasting impact of this collaboration. The partners have already agreed to continue and expand their cooperation in future projects – a real win-win for training, innovation and product quality in Tyrol.
