STIHL Tirol sets a course for the future

  • Revenue of € 733 million following three years of strong growth
  • New lawn mower series
  • Appreciation bonus for employees again in 2024
  • Award-winning employer

Like many industrial companies, STIHL Tirol experienced a decline in sales in 2024 and a corresponding drop in revenue. The year was marked by ongoing consumer restraint, geopolitical uncertainty and regional disparities in economic development. Following several years of exceptionally strong growth during the coronavirus pandemic, annual revenue in 2024 totalled € 733 million. Despite a significant decrease of around 23 percent compared to 2023, sales remained above pre-pandemic levels. During the pandemic years, an above-average number of consumers invested in their homes and gardens, including gardening equipment. Since then, spending priorities have increasingly shifted elsewhere.

Revenue was also affected by deliveries being brought forward from 2024 to 2023 in preparation for the transition to a new business software system. The complex switch to a new SAP version had a significant impact on business processes at the beginning of the year. Additionally, the transformation from petrol-powered to battery-powered products advanced more slowly than anticipated. In Austria, as in Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, approximately every second STIHL product sold is now battery-powered. In Germany and Switzerland, the cordless share is around 60 percent. Despite economic headwinds, STIHL continues to invest strategically in future technologies, innovative products and the ongoing development of the site.

The number of employees increased slightly from 887 to 927 in 2024. While this transformation presents new opportunities for employees, it also requires the company to remain agile and responsive to change. Jan Grigor Schubert, Managing Director of STIHL Tirol: “Last year, we commissioned ten new assembly lines featuring an exceptionally high level of automation by industry standards. These are now producing innovative products that have already successfully entered the market. Our new cordless garden tools, particularly lawn mowers and the lawn mower models developed specifically for the US market, have made a promising start and are already filling our order books for 2025. Our future success is guided by the three principles of our corporate strategy: focusing on our strengths, intensifying collaboration across locations and departments, and implementing change with resolve.”

Successful innovations

STIHL Tirol successfully launched numerous new product lines in 2024. Cordless products developed at the headquarters in Germany, such as blowers and hedge trimmers, are also successfully rolling off production lines in Tyrol. Alongside hand-held cordless tools, which are expected to see strong utilisation in 2025, the new 2 Series and 4 Series lawn mowers developed in Tyrol have proven particularly popular. Both series feature extended cutting widths and a wide range of functions, from rear and side discharge to mulching capabilities. The 4 Series impresses with its integrated mulching function and Human Machine Interface (HMI) system for capturing mowing-related data. A key innovation is the new common parts concept – a modular strategy featuring around 90 shared parts that can be used across both series. The new 7 Series cordless lawn mowers were also successfully launched at the beginning of 2025. The series sets new performance standards for the professional segment: with a high mowing performance of over 3kW, powered by two STIHL AP batteries, it offers a viable alternative to conventional petrol models.

Advantage through automation

Automation plays a central role in the competitive strength of STIHL Tirol. It enables efficient, standardised production processes and reduces the workload for employees. With the introduction of the new SAP S/4HANA process and system infrastructure at the beginning of 2024, STIHL Tirol has taken an important step toward data-driven optimisation. The change aims to structure and standardise processes across the STIHL Group and make them more efficient through consistent data. The Tyrolean company also actively fosters strong partnerships between business and science.

In collaboration with selected institutions, STIHL Tirol develops solutions to address future challenges. One example of this is the successful partnership with Kufstein University of Applied Sciences. A joint project with the university analysed the iMOW robotic mower assembly line to identify efficiency potential and implement the findings. Additionally, a research project with the Center for Production, Robotics & Automation at the MCI Entrepreneurial School® in Innsbruck produced important results within the first year. The focus here is on integrating cutting-edge technologies into production processes and implementing them in real-world settings. For example, an automated palletising system was introduced successfully despite space constraints, supported by targeted employee training. Current research with the MCI spans five key areas: assembly automation, innovation in assembly processes, employer positioning in production and automation, material flow optimisation and data-driven approaches in production and engineering.

Voluntary appreciation bonus and awards

At STIHL Tirol, changes, innovations and progress are driving advancements in the areas of production, internal processes and products. This transformation is unlocking new efficiency potential and creating a wide range of exciting opportunities for employees. The company remains focused on developing talent and fostering future-focused expertise. STIHL Tirol places great importance on fostering a respectful and appreciative working environment for all employees and continuously invests in attractive additional benefits and employee retention. As a clear gesture of appreciation, the team received a voluntary appreciation bonus in April 2025 for their contributions the previous year. STIHL Tirol understands that a company’s success is built on its employees. STIHL Tirol also sets standards in apprenticeship training. At the beginning of 2025, the company was once again awarded the title “Outstanding Tyrolean Apprenticeship Provider”. This accolade highlights the exceptional quality of the Langkampfen-based company’s training programmes and reinforces its reputation as an attractive and responsible employer for young talent.

Social responsibility is another cornerstone of the corporate culture. In March 2025, STIHL Tirol was once again honoured by the Tyrolean Social Ministry Service with the “We are inclusive” award for its inclusive approach to integrating people with disabilities into the workplace. Social commitment includes measures such as accessibility, internship opportunities and targeted support for individuals with special needs. In the BEST RECRUITERS study 2024/25, STIHL Tirol ranked third in Austria in the industrial sector and first in Tyrol – underscoring its strong standing as an employer. The Langkampfen site also held numerous group events over the course of the last year. Some of the special experiences that stood out included the summer party at Kufstein Fortress, the Ski and Toboggan Day and the annual team events organised by each department.
